Considerations for millimeter wave interconnection(2)

Published by admin 2021-11-10

This is why waveguides are often chosen for interconnection in many millimeter wave applications. In the case of the same frequency as coaxial or some planar transmission lines, waveguide interconnection usually has greater power capacity and lower loss. However, as surface finish becomes an important factor affecting RF loss at millimeter wave frequencies, it is important to correctly process or coat conductive surfaces. Therefore, for millimeter-wave interconnects used in critical or sensitive applications, conductors often have precious metal coatings, especially gold, because of its corrosion resistance and excellent electrical conductivity. The high radio frequency loss in millimeter wave interconnection also comes from the dielectric, so the choice of dielectric is an extremely important aspect of millimeter wave design.

Another reason why millimeter wave applications usually use waveguide interconnects or dedicated cable assemblies is to deal with the challenges encountered by operators when making physical connections. For example, for RF and microwave coaxial, operators with certain skills and experience can make RF connections correctly without using special tools. However, at millimeter wave frequencies, the size and tolerances of connectors and components usually determine the need for precision machine assembly. For some operators, just connecting millimeter-wave coaxial connectors together can also be challenging. Therefore, the use of precision indexed cable assemblies is becoming more and more common. The ability to accommodate more RF interconnections in the same or smaller connector footprint is another reason for the widespread use of these dedicated cable assemblies.
