How to balance the size and material of RF cables and connectors for avionics?(3

Correct interconnection

A key consideration for RF interconnection of avionics is the dielectric and how it behaves in that environment when it reaches equilibrium with the surrounding environment. For example, at a certain flying altitude, an airplane will generate more vacuum environment to provide degassing conditions for dielectrics and other electronic materials. When the plane returns to the ground, the cable is basically vacuum. Any fluid or gas around it will be absorbed by the dielectric, and they will condense again in it. Back then, dielectrics were like sponges: the only way to remove contaminants was to bake them. This is obviously not feasible inside the aircraft, so steam sealing is also essential for high-end, high-performance, high-altitude applications.

There are many factors that must be considered when designing the correct RF interconnection solution. For example, polyethylene improves flame resistance and flame resistance; for outdoor or indoor environments, it is a very good wiring choice with a flame-retardant UL certification sheath. Note: Polyurethanes can be more flexible, but they cannot be used in manned environments.

In terms of the airframe, high-temperature resistant PTFE (synthetic fluoropolymer) dielectric cables are usually used, and can be combined with PTMP (polyester plastic) tape winding with very low loss higher than the standard. This type of solution can be used up to 50 GHz or higher. At the high end of the temperature range, some silica cables are rated as high as 800 °C or higher.

Connector optimization

The ultimate goal is to optimize the mechanical, environmental and electrical performance of the connector and make it very easy to install. There are a variety of aluminum and plastic connectors to choose from to keep the weight light.

The industry is using Delrin and other materials to develop plastics, including threaded connectors, snap-on connectors, and bayonet connectors. Other research and development of ultralight solutions are underway, including modular connector solutions with plastic coupling and tooling solutions. This method will facilitate maintenance and enable users to solve problems directly on site.

Tools can simplify assembly

When you need to install RF interconnect solutions in the aftermarket or perform maintenance work on site, you can use tools instead of using blades on site, making on-site assembly safer and easier in areas that may be disputed.
